Prueba de una G450X por endurero gringo

Mensaje por Cienfu el Jue Mayo 28 2009, 14:05

Resumen:
- Piezas caras

Before I begin I should tell a little about myself. I do a LOT of trail
riding (mostly tight to flowing single trail), weigh about 100kg geared
up, about 178cm or 5'11". Bit of enduro and mx racing and I can really
only compare this bike to what I've been riding for the last 3 years,
an '06 KTM 450 EXC which is very well set up, 18mm clamps, resprung etc.

So I only got my new bike Tuesday, prepped it Wednesday....not much to
do, the dealer and/or factory have done a good job with the grease and
anti seize, but I did swap the 15 tooth front for the 14 (48 on the
back). After a 20 minute ride around my small track at home Thursday
arvo, I was already impressed with the handling but the catalytic
converter REALLY chokes it up....so Friday arvo I performed a
catectomy. Remus system is on order.

Myself, my regular riding buddy(09 300EXC) and my brother(06 250EXC)
went out Sunday for a bit of a ride, nothing too serious as it was 30+
degrees at 10am hotter in the sun and no wind, very dry and dusty.
First impression, the BM is no torque monster like the KTM. But the
stroke is 10+mm shorter so it does rev a lot more freely. I'm also used
to a six speed box with very low first and tall sixth. Have to adjust
my riding style a little 'cos I'm not a big revver or throttle ripper.
Everything is still a little tight and I think it will get a lot
better. BTW....plugged in for 50 odd HP from the shop.

If you read the brochure, BMW are really selling this bike on the
handling and traction....and they have delivered. Big time! It's
actually hard to break traction and it is the most well balanced bike I
have ever ridden. And it steers. Where the KTM would push the front the
BM holds on tight and turns. Because of the balance it does not feel
heavy at all. More like a 250F without all the noise! The Ohlins
shock is really impressive. I haven't touched a thing on the suspension
and it seems to be sprung OK for me and handled everything I threw at
it. A little firm and the back end does sit high, but I like that. My
mate Dan is a little vertically challenged and struggled with it.

The ergo's on this bike are perfect for me, I felt really comfortable
right away (one bike I could NOT get comfortable on was the
CRF450X....great motor but I just couldn't come to terms with it). Very
narrow at the front 'cos there's no tank up there, seat makes KTM feel
like a lounge chair, but you shouldn't be sitting anyhow. BTW the seat
is one piece. No base, no foam, no cover! Don't have to remove it to
change air filter either. Where the tank hangs down on the left side
and the exhaust guard on the right I can grab these comfortably with my
knees and hang on tight in an attack position. Good balance also equals
good wheelies^tng

Brembo brakes as usual are top notch, the solid disc on the front is a
real one finger job. It does have a noticable amount of engine braking
which I think is due to the clutch on the crank (also why it has the
cable clutch, which is light and lot's of feel) and the crank spins
backwards (less forward inertia is the theory).

It's pretty hard to bag a new bike you've just spent your hard earned
cash on, I did have some reservations, but it is very impressive. It is
deceptively fast as you're not working hard to get it moving along. I
was all ready to buy a Husky and looked at the BM at the last minute.
The build quality combined with the features of this bike impressed me
and at the same price.

For me the handling and ergo's are the two most impressive things about
this bike and handling is the reason I wanted to upgrade to an '09. It
doesn't have any nasty habits or do anything wrong. Could probably do
with a 50 or 52 on the back to close the gaps up in the gearbox just a
little.

Overall I love it. Very happy I made a good choice on something new. So
the only unproved factor is reliability, but the warranty is good and
the dealer is keen to impress. BTW....they're happy for me to do oil
and valves, so long as it goes back for 70 hour top end and crank
inspection. Small price to pay for a 2 year warranty. Only one bike in
WA has done 70 hours so far.

Most of the riding we did was about 20km's up a dry creek bed with lots
of twists and turns, drop offs, step ups and jumps with multiple tracks
crossing over. The photo's are at a small bermed up circuit we found at
the end of the creek.

UPDATE.

So after a second outing I'm truly in love. Eats hills and despite the
whingers, I love the suspension. The motor is getting better as it
loosens up. I have swapped the 48 rear for a 50 but not ridden it yet
(the first joy of owning a BMW....$110 for a rear sprocket!!). At first
I did think the air filter access would be a bit of a PITA, but is
pretty easy actually.

My only criticism so far is the intake noise is very annoying. Combined
with the reflected noise from the ali bash plate I'm considering ear
plugs!

Still waiting for Force accessories to release a good radiator guard. Here's the bash plate....5mm ali.
